The instrument controls the amplitude and frequency of the oscillating force, and the temperature can also be varied.
In the illustration of a DMA plot below, G' and G", with units of Pascals, are graphed relative to the axis on the left, and tan delta, with no units, is graphed relative to the axis on the right. They are graphed versus increasing temperature. Plots with vs. frequency or strain are also possible.
G', Elastic modulus
G", Viscous modulus
tan d, Damping coefficient
Force- measured using the voltage or current applied to the drive motor
Strain- measured by displacement sensors
A new development (2000)- Force and displacement are measured at the sample clamps.
